First Day of Summer Vacation
Not for me but for The Princess.
As I was having my morning coffee today I realized that it was The Princcess's first day of summer vacation as school ended yesterday
Remember how that felt ? You woke up early because you thought you had to get to class then it hit you.
Summer !
So you went back to bed, and maybe you slept, but probably not because now you were all excited.
Vacation !
Two months of sleeping as late as you wanted to. Every day . Except today, because today you had things to do.
Summer !
Two months of no reading unless you wanted to, and then it was probably comic books.
Vacation !
Two months of no writing, unless it was to write a note to your parents saying you were gone to a friend's place for the day. Nah, we didn't write notes, we just went and prayed our parents didn't find us because we were probably doing something we weren't supposed to be doing, like jumping our bikes over their pool.
Summer !
Two months of playing hide and seek or cowboys and Indians until long after the sun went down because you didn't have to get up for school tomorrow.
Vacation !
Two months of your mom shouting "Don't slam the screen door" but you never heard her because you were long gone.
Summer !
Two months of swinging on the Tarzan swing at the lake with your friends, every one of you trying to go higher or farther than the other guy.
Vacation !
Two months of jumping on your bicycle in the morning and riding until the sun went down or until your legs gave out, whichever came first.
Summer !
Two months of swimming, and fishing, and catching tadpoles. And tomorrow you'd ride a rocket ship to the moon.
Vacation !
Remember that feeling ?

Kids, Sleepovers, and Groundhogs
The Princess went to a friend's cottage over the weekend along with several other girls for a birthday party. The party was basically two fun-filled days of swimming, boating, tubing, waterboarding etc. She had a fantastic time. The girl's mother sent us a slide show of pictures. The first pic shows The Princess driving one of the boats (yes, they all got a turn, supervised of course). The second one shows her "steering" one of the rafts. Although it's a bit far away it's pretty obvious she's grinning from ear to ear. Anyway, as I said, she had a great time. Next Saturday she goes to another friend's sleepover birthday party. Apparently there's shopping involved.
Which brings me to my next point. I can't remember the last time The Princess was home for the whole weekend. It was probably around her birthday but then she had a sleepover birthday party herself.
My social life was never this good and I was a pretty popular kid.
On another note, a musical one to be exact, I was listening to the radio last night. It was tuned to one of the kids favourite stations so a rap song came on. I was kind of enjoying it, it had a pretty decent beat, until I heard the following line "You can take it to the momo." I called the Princess and asked if I'd heard right and she replied "Oh yeah, I love that song" and started to dance. I repeated the question in an "are you frickin kidding me ?" tone of voice. A momo ? What the heck is a momo ? Anyway, I Goggled it this morning and I think it's got something to do with a hotel, or maybe a girl. I'm not sure. I think the guy just made the word up because it rhymes with solo. I told The Princess you can't just go around making words up but she said you can if you're a rapper.
I was reading a local paper this morning and there was an article about garage sales. The writer suggested going to garage sales put on by gay couples because they always have the best stuff. Now, I don't attend a lot of garage sales but I'm pretty sure I've never seen a sign stating "Garage sale Saturday June 30th. Gay couple, lots of good stuff."
And lastly, I saw a groundhog this morning. Now you know how much I like groundhogs right ? Anyway, this one was sitting along the side of the path where I get off the bus in the morning. He couldn't have been more than two feet away, in fact if I'd leaned down I could have touched him. He looked up at me and said "Top of the morning to you my good man. What wine goes well with grass ?" then went back to enjoying his breakfast. I suggested a dry white wine would complement the sweet taste of the grass without overpowering it, then offered him the bottle I happened to have with me. He was very appreciative and said if I brought the kids next time he'd happily pose for a photograph in return.

Best Father's Day Ever
So last Sunday was indeed Father's Day and it was the best one ever.
The day started when The Princess presented me with a card, a decal, and a keychain. She made the keychain at school. The Princess said that most of the kids made sporty keychains for their dads but mine is different. Knowing of my love for books she made me a book with a bookworm on it and attached a long braided piece. It's big, it's bulky, and it barely fits in my pocket but The Princess made it so I'm using it. Besides she wrote "I love daddy " on it so that says it all.
We went out for breakfast at an excellent restaurant in Westboro (a trendy suburb) and had a wonderful meal. After breakfast we walked around as it was Westfest so there was lots to see and do. We almost got on television as they were filming a cooking show but a torrential downpour put and end to that business.
Back at home Mrs. OldGuy took the kids shopping (they'd been wanting to go all day) for presents for daddy. The Lad presented me with a handsome journal and a lovely pen. He has a similar journal and he says he really enjoys using it as it allows him to write anytime he wants and he can also write stuff he would prefer not to put online. I'm going to get a lot of use out of that. I guess that's the idea. The Lad is convinced (because I've talked about it so many times) that this is going to be my year to finally get something published. Not necessarily anything fancy, just something. The Princess gave me the book "The Last Lecture", which I'm now reading. It's a wonderful book , thouroughly enjoyable.
Later we had a huge meal of barbecued steak and potatoes accompanied by a glass of red wine. Pumpkin cheesecake wrapped up dinner just fine. After dinner there were a few more cards with spending money and a new shirt from my wife's grandmother.
All in all a truly wonderful Father's Day.
On a completely different note, mainly my absence from this place lately. Truth is I've found it hard to write. Seems every time I sit down to blog I look at the screen for five minutes then give up. I have several story ideas and one half-finished poem but I just can't seem to make any progress on them. I guess I have writer's block. Anyway, the journal should help, and there's a little competition going on at work that seems to have stirred the creative juices again so hopefully I'll have something new soon.
Anyway, that's all for now folks. Have a great day.

Out of the Mouth of Babes
Well, even at the ripe old age of 10 The Princess can still crack us up.
Last night during dinner a commercial came on the television (yes; we sometimes have it on during dinner, but to kid suitable stuff, so we're not terrible parents just not perfect ones). The commercial feautures a couple of guys in an old-fashioned station wagon, surf boards on the roof, going to the beach. Then the announcer comes on and says that if you buy a pair of board shorts (surfing-style shorts) you get a free woodie. The Princess asked what a woodie is and we all chuckled (especially The Lad). Mrs. OldGuy replied that she thought it was a surfboard, to which The Princess replied "it can't be, the guy just told his friend to get in his woodie, not on it." The Lad almost choked on his food as he stuggled to keep a straight face.
Eventually we explained that a woodie is an old-fashioned station wagon with panels and they're giving away replicas of them with every purchase.

Four Generations at Chuck E. Cheese
As I mentioned a few days ago The Princess was on break this week so she and Mrs. OldGuy went away for a few days. They visited grandma and the three of them and Mrs. OldGuy's aunt spent a few days together.
They went to Chuck E. Cheese's on Thursday and had a bunch of those photo booth pictures taken. They couldn't get a picture all together, best they could do was three at a time, so yesterday I Photoshoped a couple of the pics and put them all together in a frame. You can't see Grandma's hair but for the most part their expressions were captured quite well.
Anyway, at the top is Mrs. OldGuy and The Princess, and at the bottom is Mrs. OldGuy's grandmother and aunt. So that's four generations together at Chuck E. Cheese, complete with a fancy frame.

A Good Weekend
As the title says, it was a good weekend.
The Princess and I went to see The Bee Movie at her school on Friday night. She spent the whole time with her friends but that was fine as I wanted to actually watch the movie anyway. Also, friends of ours brought their young son (I think he's 5 years old) so The Princess and her friends kept an eye on him while her parents and I sat together and enjoyed the movie.
On Saturday The Lad and I had our guys night. The pizza was good, the beer was better, and the movie was scary as all get out (Thirty Days of Night). The Princess was of course at a sleepover and Mrs. OldGuy was out with a friend.
Today, feeling better than I have in a couple of months I played outside with The Princess and a couple of her friends. The hill they're standing on is where they've been piling the snow that's been plowed in our neighbourhood all winter. As you can see that's one big friggin hill ! The kids played on it for a while then decided they wanted to slide down it so they got their sliding tubes. I decided to join them and I had a lot of fun. That's me getting ready to go down while her friends hold the tube so The Princess could take the picture. The third picture is The Princess in a hole on the same hill. She was walking up the side and the snow gave way. I actually told her to move otherwise that would happen but she preferred to just fall in.
We played for a couple of hours and I took a whole bunch of pictures.
All in all, a good weekend.

Thank God It's The Weekend
Ever notice how long a regular work week seems after a sort one ?
Yeah, you know what I mean, you work a four day week then a five day week and the five day one seems to go on and on and on ...
Anyway, it's the weekend and thank God for that.
The Princess is going to a friend's birthday party sleepover tonight and Mrs. OldGuy is going out with a friend so it's just The Lad and I at the house. We're going to have pizza and later we're watching "Thirty Days of Night" and having a beer. A real guy's night all the way !
Hey, you know how I've mentioned before that the family always tells me I'm getting old ? Well, yesterday The Princess actually told me I looked young. Yeah, imagine that. I'd just gotten dressed for work in the morning and she said I looked really good today, in fact I looked young. It was the shirt of course, it's one Mrs. OldGuy bought me a while back and The Princess really likes it. Of course the fact that The Lad has one just like it except in a different colour probably helped.
Well, it's snowing here again. We got walloped last night and it's snowing right now. The 14 day forecast is also showing plenty of snow so I guess winter isn't over yet.
This morning I decided to go for a walk while the snow was still fresh and take some pictures. It was actually really nice out and the trees looked very pretty. Anyway, this is the path to the park that The Princess and I go to in the summer (I'm coming back from the park as I took some pictures there too; our house isn't too far up that hill). You can't really tell in the picture but that snow is a couple of feet deep.
Anyway, I have things to do so I'll sign off for now.
Have a great week folks.

Tub Reading
That is my very worn copy of The Stand. I've mentioned before that if I really like a book I'll reread it and right now I'm on my 5th ? 6th ? rereading of The Stand.
If you look closely you can see what appear to be a couple of large wrinkles in the cover on the right hand side, near the bottom. If you look even closer you can just make out a straight line going up the cover on the same side. That's packing tape. Yes, packing tape, the kind you use to tape up boxes with. Years ago I discovered that if you read a book in the tub the cover falls apart quite quickly so I decided to come up with a solution. Soon thereafter I tried covering the edges of a book with packing tape and the next time I took it in the tub it held up just fine. Since that time I have done this to every book I've ever bought. The routine is always the same, buy a book, bring it home, cover the edges with packing tape. The stuff lasts forever. I covered this one 4-5 years ago and the original packing tape is still holding up. I even do it to library books (but don't tell, it's a secret).
So now you know how to prepare your books before taking them in the tub.
And if you take a book out of your local library only to discover the covers have been taped up it means someone in your community likes to read in the tub.

Happy Valentines Day and Other Stuff
First of all, Happy Valentines Day. I hope you all have a good one. We're not planning too much, dinner with the kids, a little something for them, that's pretty much it. So it'll be a quiet Valentines but that's okay too, my wife and I went out for dinner last weekeend and we'll probably get out again soon as we have some gift certificates the lad gave us for Christmas to use up.
Speaking of the lad, his best friend came over last night and brought his dogs, one of which he and his girlfriend got a few days ago. It's a Golden Lab/Husky mix (I think that's what he said). The other is a terrier they've had for about a year. That's them in the picture. We had a lot of fun playing with them and the pup was soft and snuggly and well, just like a puppy ! Guess which one he is ?
While his friend was there they also got the wireless fixed on the lad's laptop, which made the lad quite happy. He's had the laptop for a while but hadn't tried to install wireless until this past weekend, when a friend of the family tried to help, with no success. The lad's friend tinkered with it, called Dell for what he needed and now it works fine. He also ordered back up discs from Dell as we didn't have any.
I shovelled a neighbour's walk last night, older lady who lives on our street. My wife and I have been keeping her walk and patio clean since before Christmas, and of course there was a load of snow on it again. After a few minutes my wife came out to help me and although there was a lot of snow we managed to get it done fairly quickly. This was the first time I actually enjoyed shovelling instead of complaining about it. The night was clear and cold (but not too cold) and you could see the moon and stars clearly. It's times like this that I think God is speaking to us, maybe saying something like this, "Look up here for a minute and marvel at all I can do. Or take a second look around down there, see how white and clean the snow is over there ? And what about that icicle ? I'll bet you can't make one of those. Oh, and one other thing, later tonight I'm bringing you puppies. So have a little faith, I know what I'm doing."

Left, Right, Left, Right. Hup, Two, Three, Four ...
So I wore the left/right stickies on my shoes at the office today. Although you can't read them very well it's obvious I've got something on my frickin shoes. The dare was put forth by Suzi, and mine was that I wouldn't walk around the office all day with left/right stickies on my shoes. As I work in a call centre and sit at a desk all day I didn't circulate a lot but enough to attract some attention. A couple of the ladies asked me why I had labeled my shoes so I said it was to help me remember then told them not to tell anyone. My pod-mates merely chuckled and suggested that surely I didn't have Alzheimer's yet, after all I took an English test just yesterday that ranked me a genius.
Actually the worst part of the experience was the noise. Every time I got up to walk some place the stickies made noise like paper being crumpled into a ball. My supervisor noticed the noise long before she noticed the labels (in fact I finally stopped at her desk and pointed them out).
Anyway, here's your proof Suzi. So I'm not a "weak, scared, sissy who just values traits like maturity and decorum."
BOOYAH !

Christmas Present from the Lad
So what my son got me that was a little delayed is a signed copy of Dean Koontz's book "Life Expentancy" and a picture that was taken while he was signing it. I love Dean Koontz and I've never had a signed copy of anything so this is very cool. Now I have to find a place to display it.

Out With the Old, In With the New
It was a good Christmas. I got pretty much everything I asked for, which wasn't a lot in the first place but I'm happy with my loot. A couple of new books, a new razor (no, not an electric, one of those five-bladed Gillettes that I thought my son was nuts to buy last summer), and a key chain light. I also got some new pajamas, a couple of shirts, and the traditional pair of new slippers. Now, before you start thinking "slippers, how lame is that", I wear slippers all the time and I've been getting a new pair every Christmas for years and as soon as I open them up I immediately throw out the old ones and put the new ones on. There's one gift still to come, apparently the lad ordered something on eBay but it didn't get here on time for Christmas. He's quite excited about it, says I'll really love it, so I'm quite anxious to see what it is.
My wife's family came over on Christmas eve and we went to Red Lobster for a late lunch then back to our house for dessert and snacks. Her grandmother spent the night then the next day they all came back for an untraditional Christmas dinner of barbecued steaks and baked potatoes. It was a wonderful meal and everyone enjoyed it. Of course Christmas morning we had breakfast and opened our gifts. The kids got loads of stuff, including the gifts that Santa left.
If you want to read about some bad Christmases head on over to Suzi's blog, she's listed a few for your reading pleasure.
Anyway, as the title says, it's time to ring the old year out and the new year in so I wish you all a

More Photoshop Work
Those of you who read this blog regularly (I believe there are 3-4 of you) know that the lad left for a few months earlier this year, then returned home. The picture was taken the day he got back. I'd been wanting to do something with it for a while and about a month ago I did. The title is meant to reflect the old biblical story of course, and its application to our situation. I used a bit of an edgy font in order to reflect the lad's and my love for slightly scary television shows. For years we used to watch "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" together. Now it's "Supernatural."
Anyway, it was fun as always.

Team Building
This weekend was our annual team building with the folks from work.
Once again we were off to a lovely place in the Gatineau Hills for a weekend of good food, good company and various exercises intended to increase our abilities to work together as a team (although we do that pretty well already).
I only stayed Friday night and until after lunch on Saturday but I had a good time and the facilitators were interesting, as usual.
Friday evening started off with a murder mystery dinner. The food was excellent and the troupe that was hired to do the murder mystery did an excellent job. They were good actors, quite funny, and the one who turned out to be the murderer was a surprise to most people, myself included, although the clues were there for us to follow.
The remainder of the evening was spent around the camp fire chatting and relaxing. There was a warm breeze blowing and the weather was as fine as could be for a camp fire.
Saturday morning we had a nice breakfast, then played several games, each of which was designed to highlight a particular aspect of working together as a team.
Then it was lunch time, and shortly afterword, we headed home.
All in all, it was a lovely weekend.
The picture is the place we stayed at.
One more thing, there was an interesting conversation around the camp fire about ... oh wait, I said I wouldn't blog about that.

He's Home Again
The lad came home last night after all. I went to see him shortly after that last update and the specialist had just been in. He asked the lad if he was feeling okay, which he was, and if he wanted to go home, which he most definitely did. So after setting up a follow up appointment he was released, and boy, was he glad to get out. Anyway, he's home safe and sound and we're all breathing a sigh of relief.
Last night before I went to bed I gave his left arm a little squeeze and said I was glad to have him home, forgetting that he'd had an IV line and several needles in that arm for two days. His reaction was quite interesting. It was almost as though his vision had suddenly narrowed so completely that he no longer saw me as a whole person but rather as a single, small yet vital body part, the name of which I am loath to reveal.
I'm on vacation again this week. Circumstances being what they are we're sticking close to home, maybe a little trip to Kingston on Thursday but that's about it. That's fine by me, I can use the rest.
I'm going to try to get the next chapter of the story up by the end of the week, however it may go until next week. Sorry about that, but as they say in the movies "c'est la vie."
Once again, thanks to everyone who dropped by and inquired about the lad, your concern was greatly appreciated. I'll be dropping in on all of you over the next few days.
Last but not least, I've been taking sunset pictures again. Yesterday I decided to Photoshop one of them just for fun. Before and after pictures are top and bottom. Not bad if I say so myself.

"Why the Hell Was I Over There ?"
My wife and I had an evening out last night. She won free tickets (yes, again) to see Rich Little at the Civic Centre. The show was at 7 p.m. so we left a little early so we could get a bite to eat on the way and walk around the fair a little bit before heading indoors for the show. While we were walking about we took in a show put on by a local group of break dancers. There were five or six of them, all pretty good, but two in particular were absolutely amazing. They did spins, handstands, jumping handstands, all sorts of neat stuff. These guys were talented and in amazing physical shape. Of course, the oldest one looked maybe 18, I mean hey, I could've done that when I was 18 too. Okay, maybe not.
The highlight of the evening was Mr. Rich Little himself. Rich is from Ottawa and of course he played on that a little (get it, little, he he). He did a great show, imitating all sorts of people. At one point he did say though that anyone under 40 probably wouldn't enjoy the show because he does mostly older, deader people (and if you're old or dead you know who you are; ha, I kill myself), guys like Milton Berle, Jimmy Stewart, etc. The youngest people he did were Neil diamond and Glen Campbell and even they're getting long in the tooth. He did a skit where he imitated several US presidents, including Ronald Reagan. When he does Reagan the skit starts with him walking to one end of the stage and pretending to talk to the audience. Of course the mic is still at centre stage so nobody can hear him. One of the band members calls him back and when he gets to the mic he looks around, as if totally confused, and utters the very presidential phrase "Why the hell was I over there ?" It was hilarious.
Anyway, we had a good time, and the walk back to the car was quite pleasant too as we'd parked in a nice area of town and the evening was warm.
All in all it was a very enjoyable evening.
Oh, and the work gloves story should be up by tomorrow night.

TGIF, Woo Hoo !
Although it was a short week I'm still glad it's Friday. Getting up for work after a week of sleeping late sucks so it'll be nice to sleep in tomorrow.
Not a whole lot going on right now. The Princess is going to a friend's place tonight to watch High School Musical 2 and have a sleepover. There are going to be a few other girls there too so she should have fun. The lad is making dinner tonight, Chicken Teriyaki, looking forward to that.
We don't have any big plans for the weekend, the only sure thing is that we'll take in the Greek Festival as we do every year. We really do enjoy it, there's always good music, good dancing, good food, and it's just plain fun.
I finally started writing the story about the work gloves yesterday. I expect it's going to take a few days as it'll probably be a little longer than my usual stuff. I also started a little poem yesterday. It might be spooky or it might just be silly, not sure yet, the first stanza just popped into my head while I was on the bus yesterday so I wrote it down.
Oh hey, I've been playing around with Photoshop again too, it's been months since I touched it. Not so much making things as playing around with some of the pictures I've taken with my digital camera. Maybe I'll post a few more of them.
Yeah, yeah, I know, I'm flitting from one thing to another again, but I finally figured something out the last few months. The writing is what I enjoy the most. The Photoshoppping is fun and I'll continue to do it but in the end I always come back to the writing.
Anyway, that's it for now folks.
Cheerio.

"Who wants a beer ?"
"How long did I swim today ?"
"Can you guys turn it down, we're trying to sleep."
"Look at that sunset !"
"I'm just gonna veg and watch a movie."
"Your dad's taking our picture."
"Dad, will you take me swimming again ?"
"She knows every kid here already."
"Now I'm relaxing."
"She invited all her friends for s'mores."
"I'll do it later."

Summer Fun
I'm on holidays again this week. I also have another week at the end of August. We may go away for a few days tomorrow. My brother-in-law has a trailer near a lake not too far from here so we'd like to go for a few days. The Princess has never been camping and she'd really enjoy that. Of course we all want to get away for a few days. The lad just got back from a weekend at a friend's cottage so he may or may not want to join us. Hopefully he will.
We've been trying to keep busy the last couple of days. On Friday night we went to the Busker Festival with a friend and his daughter and a couple of other girls. We took the same crew to a water park yesterday. The picture is from the Busker Festival; the girls had just gotten light sticks. Today was a quiet day as my wife was a little under the weather. I managed to weed the garden and fix the speakers in the back of the car, which hadn't been working for quite some time. Actually I didn't really fix them, I just jiggled some wires and played with the controls until they started working. I guess that was all they needed.
We've had some gorgeous sunsets here lately and I've taken a whole bunch of pictures of them. Although I posted one last week I might post another one some time as they're just too beautiful not to share (at least I think so). I'm also thinking about a poem that has to do with the end of day. It's just an idea right now but it keeps working at me. I'm still thinking about that black and green Duster down the street too as well as the picture of the work gloves I posted a few weeks ago. There are a couple of stories there.
Anyway, it's the middle of the night so I should get back to bed where I belong.
Cheers.

Huggable Friends
My name is Cookie
I'm the oldest of the bunch
I'm not as strong as a wookie
Bit I'll happily join you for lunch
I'm Mr. Munk Munk
Hockey is my game
I'm a furry little hunk
Destined for the Hall of Fame
I'm a cuddly little rabbitt
By the name of Annabelle
I'll make loving you a habit
Coz I think you're really swell
I'm sweet little Pumpkin Pie
And I really love Halloween
So get your broom and let's fly
Time to make that spooky scene
I'm the one they call Max
And I'm not fond of bugs
But if you feed me tasty snacks
I'll give you a million hugs
If you're ever in a jam
Or you can't sleep at night
I'm your friend Laura Lamb
And you can hug me tight
If you're feeling crabby
Come and have a chat
Coz with a name like Gabbie
I just love to chew the fat

He's Home
Looking a little tired after getting up early, packing, driving 7-8 hours, and having dinner with family and friends.
Welcome home son.

Musings
The lad's best friend came over last night with his girlfriend. They also brought their little dog Bailey, who is a Terrier mix of some kind. What a delightful little guy. He's just a pup so he was playful, rambunctious, and just fun to be around.
The boys have known each other since they were little kids and this fellow, this fine young man, has always been there for our son. Years ago they used to play cars together, and now the fellow has his own car, a snazzy Monte Carlo which he just loves. I remember the day he bought it, he came over to show it to us, then he and the lad went for a ride. Having been that age once I can imagine what kind of ride it was.
While they were at the house we called the lad in New Brunswick and, then and there, over the phone, his buddy told the lad they're coming to pick him up. They're going to leave tonight, stay over Saturday, then drive back Sunday. It will be a long ride but barring any unforeseen circumstances, they're going. Their minds are made up. No changing them.
As far as I'm concrned that's amazing. See, they don't have to do this because we already offered to pick the lad up and he said he'd take the bus. But they're going anyway. They want to take a road trip. And see the ocean. And bring the lad home.
Because they're friends.
I wish I had a friend like that.
Delightful. Now there's a word for you. It's like happy but a bit different because it makes you want to giggle. I'm not supposed to giggle. Kids giggle. And girls. But I've felt like giggling a lot this week. A sunset. A movie. A playful dog. A phrase in the book I'm reading. They're so delightful they make me want to giggle till boogers come out my nose.
It's a neat feeling.

Hairspray - No Spoilers So Read On
We went to see Hairspray last night with a friend and our two girls.
This is without a doubt one of the best movies I have seen in years.
It's funny, happy, upbeat, the music is fantastic and the acting is wonderful. The story is a good one and you'll love the ending. Oh heck, you'll love the whole movie.
There were plenty of kids and teens in the theatre, including our 2 girls, and they loved it as much as the adults did, even if a couple of the jokes were above their heads (the kids, not the teens, they got them just fine).
If it's true that laughter is good for your health, then do your body a big favour and go see this movie. It might just be the best medicine for what ails you. Then go back and see it again for the music. And the dancing. And the wonderful story line. And the great acting. Geez, that makes like 5 times you'll have to see it.
Oh heck, it'll be worth it. We're certainly planning to go again.
Oh yeah, my wife and the princess want the soundtrack too, which is fantastic.
One more thing. You might cry in spots too, but they'll be tears of joy so it's all good.

Musings
So this is my second day back at work after a week off. Things have slowed down a bit so that's nice. The pace was a bit hectic before I left.
We didn't get to Toronto or Niagara Falls after all. The princess was feeling a bit under the weather late last week. The big thing though was that I finally went shopping for new glasses, and man are they frickin expensive ! Oh, I get some money back from my benefit plan but I still have to pay up front first. The last time I shopped for glasses was a couple of years ago, and like everything else, the price of them has gone way up. And I'm not getting anything fancy either, just something that lets me see the world without looking like a dork. The big hit is on the prescription, which in my case is a progressive tri-focal. That means I can't see anything at three distances, or to put it another way, I'm legally blind three times.
Getting older sucks.
On another note, I got lots of sleep last week. I usually get up between 5:30 - 6 a.m. but last week I was rarely up before 9. Needless to say getting up for work yesterday was brutal.
On still another note, the lad might be coming home. Seems things aren't quite working out as planned. We'll see.
And lastly, the sunset. I took this photo last night, and no, I didn't Photoshop it, just zoomed in and snapped it. Because I was shooting into the sun the trees showed up dark, just leaving the colours of the sky, which almost seem to have intensified in the picture. I could have "fixed" it but decided I like it just the way it is.

New Bike
Remember that feeling of getting a brand new bike ?
You could race the wind. You were the envy of all your friends. You were the top dog because you had the fastest wheels around.
Guess who got that feeling ?

A Peaceful, Easy Feeling
This is our front patio. It was pretty much designed by my wife. I contributed a little talent and some grunt work but it's mostly her creation. This is where I like to sit with a cup of coffee after work and read, or watch the kids, or just plain old relax. I prefer the chair at the very back, near the door (there's another one on the right, hidden behind the tree).
Like the song says, it's a peaceful, easy feeling.

Tim Dorsey Answered My E-mail
I was at Tim Dorsey's site yesterday and decided to write him an e-mail telling him how much I love his books. I never in a million years expected an answer so imagine my surprise when I opened my e-mail this morning and found his reply. Not only that but this wasn't a form letter type response, he had actually taken the time to read my e-mail and respond to my comments.
Way to go Tim, you rock !

I'm Stoked
I got an idea for another poem a couple of days ago. Have to work on it. Then this morning I got a great (well, I think it's great) story idea !
It'll be a couple of days while I iron out the details but hopefully by early next week I'll have two new offerings.
I love the feeling I get when this happens, like a kid opening a present on Christmas morning.

Musings
In my last Musings post I asked the question. "Is Sunday the beginning of the week or the end ?" The Princess informed me (looking at me like I'm an idiot) that it's the beginning. So the weekend is composed of the first and last days of the week. Whose stupid idea was that ?
I really need to get new glasses. I've had a prescription for a couple of months but haven't been to get them yet. I did buy new shoes a few weeks ago though so now I can walk in comfort. I just can't see where I'm going.
I made a couple little changes to the commenting system last night as the spam is back. You won't notice them though, they're completely invisible. Oh, and I can't tell you what the changes are either or the spammers might read about them and find a way around them. I only mention it in case you're interested.
Tomorrow is the year-end BBQ at my daughter's school. We've been going to these every year for the last 4 years now, and I really look forward to it. It's a chance to catch up with people I haven't seen all winter and see how much the kids have grown since last year. The BBQ also signals the end of another school year of course. The princess loves it but it's always a bittersweet feeling for me because it means she's getting older and moving on. Plus every year they have this guy who plays guitar and sings and he always plays a few oldies and it makes me cry. I think he does it purpose.
About Lumbago. He's sticking around. Someone who shall remain nameless (that's you Les) finds him amusing. I have to mention though that he's given me a little grief. You see, he wasn't supposed to be a permanent fixture. The original idea was to do a send up of Suzi's blog (which I am a big fan of) and Lumbago was supposed to be the straight man to her slightly wacky personality (and I mean that in a nice way Suzi). It didn't turn out that way. Lumbago sort of took over, exercising the full force of his strong, albeit deranged personality, on me. He insisted that his story be told, and when I tried to get rid of him he refused to go. One night he even woke me up in the middle of the night and insisted I write a song about him. We argued, there was much wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth, me insisting I'm not a song writer, he saying that wasn't his problem, and we finally agreed to a compromise. I'd "borrow" an old Abba song and change the words. He said it would do. For now. Anyway, all of that to say that I'm stuck with him. I still have to finish telling the story of how he got the way he is (he tends to go off on tangents) but it's coming. What I really want to know though is how he got to Canada.
As to writing other stuff, poems, non-Lumbago stories, I'll continue to do that. As soon as he unties me.

Musings
I used to post something called Sunday Morning Musings until a few months ago. The reason I stopped was that some Sundays I didn't have anything to say. Once in a while I'd even post Monday Morning Morsels just to make up for the lack of the Sunday post, and I'd be awake all night Sunday trying to think of something interesting to say. After a while I was going into work on Monday mornings exhausted and unable to perform my job properly and I was almost fired and this created great stress in my life and I was angry all the time and argued with my wife constantly and yelled at my kids and one Monday morning I was so upset I shot the neighbour's dog.
It just wasn't worth it.
Problem is though, I sorta miss these posts myself because some Sundays I actually had something interesting to say and it was a blast to just sit down and let all my thoughts come pouring out.
So I've decided to start these posts back up but just call them Musings. That way I can post any day of the week, mainly when a thought occurs to me, rather than save all my thoughts up for the end of the week, or is it the beginning of the week, what is Sunday anyway ? And if I don't have anything interesting to say on a Sunday, why, I can relax and not worry about it. And let's face it, blogging shouldn't be stressful.
The gloves ?
Well, interestingly enough, I was about to tell you about them. Those are CN Railroad work gloves (you can see the CN logo on them). One of my cousins gave these to my dad 13 or 14 years ago, said they were the best work gloves around and you couldn't buy gloves half as good in any store. My dad gave them to me not long before he died. My cousin was right. I may not be a railroad worker but I've put them through a lot. I've dug holes with them, hauled dirt, lifted, carried, pushed, and pulled stuff. I've left them out in the rain and the hot sun. And they're still in great shape. In fact I expect I'll pass them on to the lad some day and I'm sure they'll still be in good shape when I do.
They just don't make em like that anymore.

It's A Terrorist Plot
Yesterday a lady in our office, which is located in Ottawa, Canada, announced that she's quitting her job. Seems she's going elsewhere. Later in the day I discovered that a friend from Sault Ste. Marie, Canada had also quit her job; her "dream job" that is. This morning someone I haven't heard from in some time left a comment on my blog saying that he just quit his job. He lives in China. Then a little later I surf on over to my favourite blog only to discover that the author told her employers to take their job and shove it. She lives in Minneapolis.
So I figure terrorists have released a gas into the atmosphere that is causing people worldwide to quit their jobs.
Now if I can just figure out why.
Hmmm ...

A Short Long Weekend
Another long weekend come and gone. Why do three day weekends always feel so short ?
Anyway, it was a pretty good weekend. On Saturday we went down to Scotiabank Place (formerly known as the Corel Centre, formerly known as the Palladium; you know how it is, whoever pays the bills gets their name on the building) to watch the Ottawa Senators play the Buffalo Sabres on the big screen television they set up outside (the game was in Buffalo). It was a real party atmosphere with things for the kids to do and stuff. And best of all, Ottawa won the game so now we go to the Stanley Cup ! The picture is the princess with her face painted Senator's black, red and gold. She enjoyed the game and fun as much as her mother and I did.
Sunday was a rainy day so we took advantage of the weather to get a few things done. My wife took the princess shopping and I cleaned the house. Later that evening the princess modelled her new outfits for us. She's very proud of the fact that she got a little bra. Me, I'm freaked out !
Yesterday we lounged around for a good part of the day then went down to the market for beavertails around dinner time. It was quite nice so we took a walk around the area then headed home.
All in all, a good weekend.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there. And to everyone, don't forget to call your mother or give her a card or just do something to make her feel appreciated today. These ladies are pretty darn special. We're going to have a nice Chinese food take out dinner tonight (my wife's choice) and maybe a little glass of wine for the big people and a glass of pretend wine for the princess. I know I'll be thinking of my mother. She died twelve years ago and I still miss her, always will. She taught me a lot and she was one of my best friends.
My wife took me shopping today, you'd almost think it was Father's Day instead of Mother's Day. Seriously though I desperately needed a new pair of shoes and a couple of outfits for work so off we went today and got all that stuff. As much as I hate shopping I'm very happy that she dragged me out to get it done (like she said, "that stuff isn't going to buy itself"). The really good thing was that the princess was at a friend's for a sleepover so we had plenty of time this morning to go and look for stuff. The only thing we didn't have time for was to get my new glasses, so we'll do that this week.
Speaking of going out (yeah, I was speaking about it, you just weren't paying attention) Mrs. OldGuy and I went out together for the first time in a long time last night. As the princess was at a friend's for a sleepover we had the evening to ourselves. We went to a nice little place called The Trio and had drinks and munchies. Afterwards we went to a local pastry and picked up a couple treats to bring home. Once back at the house we had our treats with a little wine and enjoyed each other's company. It was a wonderful evening. Hopefully we won't wait so long to do it again.
The lad called a couple of days ago, says he misses us and wants to come home soon. We miss him too and look forward to seeing him.
So what's the picture ? Well, here's the story. Every spring I clean the barbecue to get it ready for another season of grilling. Last year I didn't do this. The first time I used it, I turned it on to preheat and went back in the house. When I came out again a few minutes later the greasy crud at the bottom had caught fire and was burning so fiercely I thought Saddam Hussein had come back to life and mistaken my barbecue for a Kuwaiti oil rig. All I could do was turn off the gas, close the cover, and pray. Eventually the fire went out but for a while there I thought I'd have to call in Red Adair's people. Anyway, as the barbecue needed a new burner I took the old one off today and decided this was as good a time as any to clean it. The left half of the picture is what it looked like after I'd taken the burner out and had just started scraping out the sticky, gooey, oily, crud. The right half is the nice clean barbecue. So what did I do with the crud ? I snuck into a local McDonald's and dumped into one of their fryers. Judging by the amount of grease dripping off the last burger I had from that place I doubt they'll even notice.

Excellent Weekend
Yesterday was an absolutely gorgeous day, sunny, warm, you couldn't have asked for better. A friend called around noon and asked if I'd be interested in getting together with our girls and taking them out for the afternoon. Although this sounded like an excellent idea I wasn't sure I wanted to leave my wife alone for the afternoon however she said to go, get out of the house and take advantage of the weather. As the princess had to go to a birthday party from 3:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. anyway my wife suggested we could get the 2 girls together for a couple of hours then take the princess to her birthday party, then meet back up for a little picnic. And later if I wanted I could always invite our friend and his daughter over for an hour or so in the evening. It sounded like a good plan to me so off we went.
We took the girls to a black light putting range (yeah it was indoors but it was still neat) where the four of us played a fun 18 holes of mini golf. Then it was time to take the princess to her party so I did that and we arranged to meet back up later for the picnic. I went and looked at glasses as I need a new pair, and found a few frames I liked.
At around 5 p.m. we met up and I went and picked up the princess and we grabbed some food and headed to a local spot near the river where we had a lovely picnic and got lots of fresh air.
It had been a big day at this point so we decided to head back to our place for coffee and some down time. My wife met me at the door and said something about being busy so could I run upstairs and put the coffee on, which I happily agreed to do. I walked up stairs and that's when I saw ...
Our house was filled with people and they all yelled SURPRISE ! and something about my birthday and it turns out my wife had planned this wonderful 50'th birthday surprise party for me. There was a whole bunch of people and great food and drink and presents and we partied until 2 a.m. And as the pictures attest it was a wonderful time. Check out that lovely spread of food (and that was only half of it).
Lots of people (like my wife) had worked really hard to get this party together for me. Thanks to all of you, but especially my wife. You're the best sweetie!
Lumbago will have to wait another day or two. Sorry folks, I really meant to get back to his adventures today but after being up so late last night my head is in a fog. I expect the next installment should wrap it up (it's already half written, I actually started it on Friday).

Wow, Can Summer Finally Be Here ?
This is the scene at a local Dairy Queen around 4:30 p.m. today. Compare that with the one taken on Monday when we had one of the worst storms in months.
Only in Canada.
Of course this picture was taken with MY AWESOME NEW DIGITAL CAMERA !
So, you folks getting tired of hearing that yet ?

Maybe Now I Can Eat in Peace
So the endoscopy seemed to go okay. The doctor didn't mention that he found anything untoward although I do have to go back and see him in 2 months. He did stick a balloon down there and blow it up in order to expand the swallowing tube. Afterwards he made a cute little dog out of the balloon and gave it to me as a souvenir. It was all covered in slobber but it's the thought that counts eh ?
Anyway, only time will tell if that helped but at least I was able to eat without any problems last night.

Pretty Good Birthday
Well, overall it was a pretty good birthday. I got a card from the folks at work, which was nice.
In the evening the family, that is myself, Mrs. OldGuy, the princess, grandma, and a couple of other relatives went out to a very nice steakhouse for dinner. I ordered a huge steak and French fries, ate half, and brought the rest home for lunch today.
After dinner we came home for cake and coffee and presents. I love presents. Speaking of which, the pictures were taken with MY AWESOME NEW DIGITAL CAMERA !!! Yes, my wife bought me one, which is so cool. I love it ! That's the princess and myself and my hand, sporting the silver bracelet the princess gave me. The lumps are courtesy of the arthritis. Somewhat ugly but nothing I can do about that I'm afraid.
The lad called just as we walked in the door and it was great to talk to him. Unfortunately he's off work right now (yeah, he just started a new job) because he cut himself rather badly doing dishes.
There was one down side to the day. I've recently developed a problem swallowing (I'm having tests done for it) and after we got home I started to cough quite badly. I finally got sick then got the shakes quite bad. Although I'm obviously okay the cough seems to be lingering today. Oh well, as I said, I'm having the problem investigated at the end of the month so hopefully it's nothing serious.
Anyway, that's it for now, so have a great weekend folks.

Not to Shabby a Weekend
So as I said last Thursday we went to Toronto for the weekend, took Grandma with us. Mrs. OldGuy (who turned 44 last Friday), the princess and I left home Friday morning and made the short drive to Brockville where we picked grandma up. Then it was off to Toronto. My wife drove all the way as I'm a bit sore these days and certainly don't mind relinquishing the wheel. We got to Toronto around 5:30 p.m., took our stuff up to the appartment and settled in. Then it was off to dinner at The Pickle Barrel, one of our favourite restaurants. After that we went back to the appartment and called it a day shortly thereafter.
Saturday we went to Ikea for breakfast then to the Yorkdale Mall for a few hours, then to The Mandarin Restaurant for dinner. Unfortunately the princess had come down with a bit of a bug by then and couldn't eat. Not only that but she was sick to her stomach all evening and through the night.
Easter Sunday, although the Easter Bunny managed to find us and left plenty of treats the princess hunted for about 15 minutes then decided she needed to lay down. She had no interest whatsoever in chocolate and in fact barely ate anything all day, even at Grandma's later that evening (we left Toronto around 2 p.m. and headed back). On the other hand she was just chipper enough that she and I joked and laughed most of the way back as I sat in the back seat of the car with her and grandma rode up front with my wife.
Yesterday we left grandma's in the late afternoon and were back in Ottawa an hour later. The princess had a bit of homework to do, which sucked but that's life. I put on my pyjamas early, puttered on the computer for a bit, finished a book then went to bed.
All in all, not too shabby a weekend. Now I have to get the next installment of our never-ending murder mystery done. It should be out by tomorrow night.
On another note, I've decided to open up comments again (no need for me to approve them). Since my host upgraded to MT 3.34 the spam filter seems to be working really well. That and the fact that I close comments to entries more than 3 months old has drastically reduced the amount of spam so I think it's safe to do, at least for now.
One more thing, this Friday, April 13th, I turn the big five oh. My friend Suzi says it's just a number. So is 666.

Sunday Morning Musings
As some of you may have noticed it's been a while since I've been here on a Sunday. If you've been paying attention you've also noticed I simply haven't been blogging as much since the lad left. I'll let you figure it out.
Anyway, I'm here today and feeling okay. Not great, but okay.
It's finally beginning to look like spring and that's a good thing. You folks know about my love-hate relationship with winter (love the sights, hate the cold) so when the weather warms up it's just love-love. (love the sights, love the warmth). It's nice not to have to fiddle with boots, hats, gloves and scarves in the morning too, just grab a coat and you're out the door. In another month or so even the coat won't be necessary and not too long after that I'll be able to go out completely naked ! Well, except that I might get arrested. Not for indecent exposure but for inflicting great psychological harm upon little children. At least that's what the princess tells me. Lately it's "dad put a shirt on, dad don't wear shorts, dad just cover up !" And then there's the hair thing I told you guys about before. I'm losing it on my head but growing it elsewhere. And the stinky thing. Growing old is seriously beginning to tick me off ! Speaking of which I turn the big 50 this month and I'm not looking forward to that. See, 50 has this connotation to it, like "Oh, you're 50, what kind of shape is your retirement fund in ?" Or "Oh, you're 50, take my seat, you need it more than I do." And the worst one of all "Your blood pressure's good, your heart sounds fine, but now that you're 50 let's check your prostate."
I dreamed about the lad last night and woke up crying. Then when I woke up and went to wipe away the tears I realized my whole left arm was in pain. Fortunately I noticed this before I had moved it all the way to my face or I probably would have screamed bloody murder (speaking of which, the next installment of our mystery should be up by tomorrow night but please don't hold me to that, if you must hold me to anything let it be your soft warm bosom; it's coming, and probably another couple installments after that before we reach the exciting conclusion). So it was off to the kitchen to pop some Tylenol, whistling merrily as I went.. Only there was no Snow White. Or dwarfs. But there was drugs, which made for a somewhat happy ending. I swear I live on Tylenol. And coffee. Hey, there's an idea, if they can make decaffeinated coffee, why not make ReTylenolated coffee. You know, take out the caffeine, replace it with Tylenol. I don't know about you but I'd buy it.
I've been Photoshopping again, yes indeed I have. Someone saw the last thing I did and mentioned that it looked very retro and/or James Bondish so I decided to run with that. The idea here was to put three girls on a British looking stage and line up the girl in the middle up so that her peace sign and hip-shot pose were dead centre. Her head still shows up well as they're all against a white background. The twins were of course copied and pasted from the last image and are meant to counterbalance her. Then I added shadows and backlit the "stage" with the light fading towards the bottom. I like it myself and it looks very cool on my desktop.
Anyway, that's it for now. Have a great week folks.

TGIF
Not a whole lot of news except that it's been a pretty fair week. As already mentioned the princess had a birthday on sunday and the lad called so that was all good. The weather is really starting to warm up so that's good too. Of course, this being eastern Canada winter may not be completely over but at leat one can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Other than that, not much news except to say that part two of "A Murder in Minneapolis" should be up by Sunday.

Just a Few Updates
The lad called his sister on her birthday. She was very happy and excited to hear from him. After she spoke to him we all said a few words. He seems happy and is doing well. He says he misses us, and of course we told him we miss him too. He might come for a visit soon, so that would be great.
The weather was brutally cold this morning but it's supposed to warm up considerably over the next few days. I'm certainly looking forward to that, it should help the old joints.
The princess was on March break last week and thoroughly enjoyed herself. She lazed around the house, did a few things with her mother, went to a cooking class one day, and out for birthday lunch last Friday at her favourite Japanese restaurant. They cook the food right at your table, and although we've been many times she'd never actually seen them do the flame thing (that's where they make a really big fire right in front of you) so the cook did it for her. She was suitably impressed as the flames shot right up into the exhaust vent way up near the ceiling. On Sunday we went out for diner and took her best friend with us, then came home for coffee and cheesecake with friends.
A colleague at work mentioned I should try Enbrel for the arthritis. I think I'll ask my rheumatologist about it. Seems it works miracles, at least it did for her.
Anyway, that's it for now.
I gotta get back into writing mode soon, I feel a story or two brewing.

Happy Valentine's Day
I usually like to play around with Photoshop and come up with something original for these occasions but I haven't had time lately. I couldn't let the day go by unrecognized here at the tree house however so I managed to come up with a little something I'd saved way back when.
Have a lovely day.
Oh, and I should mention that the princess wants to write a story for the blog. Seems she's thrilled with the idea that she can write something for the whole world to see (not that I'm deluding myself that the whole world actually visits my blog).

An Explanation
I feel I have to explain this whole crying thing because some of you may think it's getting a wee bit out of hand.
I wasn't always like this. I used to be a rock. Well, maybe not a rock but a pebble anyway. You know, like in the old show Kung Fu, remember how the master used to tell Kane when he could snatch the pebble from his hand his training would be done ? So I was like that pebble. Except I wasn't in a Shaolin monastery. And there weren't any monks. So basicallly I was a little pebble laying on the ground. But I was hard.
Then a couple of years ago something happened. I started to feel mushy. I was losing my hardness. Hormones I never knew existed (we'll call them female hormones for the sake of argument) started to invade my being. I found myself becoming sensitive. I started listening to soft rock and admiring flower gardens. Folding laundry stopped being a PITA and became an opportunity to listen to Neil Diamond sing Mr Bojangles and tear up at the lyrics.
Soon I found myself writing about my feelings and actually enjoying it. Then (gasp !) I began writing stories and poems.
And I began to cry more often. Whether I found something sad or beautiful I cried. And sometimes (could it be female hormones after all ?), I cried for no reason.
I had lost my hardness. Of course I cried as my hardness had been my companion for many years and it's always very sad when a man loses his hardness.
And so, no longer hard, I had to find my way. With lots of support from my family, (well, sort of, mostly the kids are just embarrassed and ask me to hide in my room when they have friends over and my wife asks if I'll ever be hard again) I learned to cope.
It's been a tough journey but I'm getting through it. And sometimes I still get a little hard, and I rejoice and do a happy dance.

Out of the Mouth of Babes
It's been a while since I blogged about something the princess said but I just had to get this one in.
Last night she was goofing around with her mother and I while doing her homework (yeah, I know, but she got the work done eventually). Anyway, she asked if she could date boys some day and they'd hug and kiss and call each other snookiepuss. We almost died laughing.

It was a Good Start to the New Year
So New Year's eve we had a feast of Chinese food and a little vino. The lad then went out with some friends while my wife and I and the princess spent a quiet evening at home. We rang in the new year at midnight with a glass of champagne and a little non-alcoholic beverage for the princess. I had promised the princess we'd run over to her friend's house at midnight and wish her a happy New Year, which we did. They both got a big kick out of that, I think it's something they'll remember for a long time. My wife was a bit tired so she and the princess went to bed shortly thereafter. The lad was home by 12:30, having had a good time with his friends. I watched a bit of television then went to bed.
New Year's day we hung around the house for a bit then around 4 p.m. we went out for dinner with my brother in law and his lady. It was a wonderful dinner, although the lad's stomach was a bit off.
I also spoke to my brother last night. We haven't seen each other for a long time but we stay in touch and it was good to talk to him. He sounder older but I probably do too. Take care of yourself big brother.
To finish off the day I discovered that I won Suzi's monthly pay-per-post draw, so that was very cool. Thanks Suzi and Happy New Year to you and your family once again.
So it was a a good start to the new year.

It's a Good Day
Today is a good day, it really is.
Firstly it's Friday, so the weekend is just a whisper away. Secondly the office is closing at noon. Thirdly, I'm on vacation next week. Fourthly it's goodie day (every Friday someone has to bring in treats, so there's food this morning). And fifthly, I took the car to work this morning and while I was driving the radio played my all time favourite song in the whole world, "Sweet Caroline" by Neil diamond, so I cranked it up and sang along.
So it's a good day.

Photoshopped a Frame for the Princess's Picture
As I haven't done anything with Photoshop for some time I decided it was time to play with it again. I did a frame for the princess's picture (see below). I hope you like it.

Still to Come, New Year's
So it was a pretty good Christmas. I got the book I asked for (Cell, by Stephen King) as well as the licorice and molasses kisses. This was my entire wish list so I'm quite happy. I also got a few other things, amongst them a pair of gloves from my wife and a pair of slippers from the princess. This has become a tradition, she gets me a new pair of slippers every Christmas. I can hardly wait to get home tonight and open the bag of licorice kisses and have a few. Not that I need the extra food of course, I ate plenty during the holidays. We had a lovely breakfast at home Christmas morning, brioche with fruit and bacon, juice, and coffee. Later in the day we drove to grandma's and went out for dinner, which was quite pleasant as the food was good and nobody had dishes to do.
Both the lad and the princess got stuff they wanted so they were quite happy as well. The lad's biggest gift was a Nintendo Wii and the princess's was a pink Nintendo DS, which Santa Claus brought her. Of course they got other stuff too but those were the biggies. The lad also got a portable television with DVD player and the princess was almost as happy as he was about it because now we can get back the portable we had taken out of the kitchen. Of course everyone got some lovely gifts from grandma and others too.
On another note, my wife has had a nasty cold/bronchial/nasal infection for several weeks so she's very glad that things have slowed down so she can get some rest.
Anyway, that's all for now, although I'm sure I'll think of something I forgot to say in a couple of minutes.
Oh right, the picture. That's the princess's latest school picture. I've had it for a few days but my wife didn't want me posting it until the relatives got their copies for Christmas.
One other thing. My blog looked broken for a few days because I forgot to check Internet Explorer when I posted the last image (it looked fine in Firefox, which is what I use).
See, I told you I'd forget something. As for comments, I've decided to hold them for moderation again because the spam is really getting bad. Sorry about that.

Christmas Parties
So we had our office Christmas dinner the might before last. Once again an excellent restaurant (a steakhouse, my favourite) was chosen for this venue and we even had a little extra fun thrown in this year. A wine tasting company was hired to host the event and we were given lessons in wine tasting, along with samples of the various wines chosen for the evening. I preferred the samples to the lessons, they were easier to swallow. A wonderful soup and a delicious chocolate cake only served to make the evening even more agreeable. As did the gift exchange ; I got a $10 gift card for a bookstore so I was quite happy with that.
Yesterday we had our staff association lunch so more good foood. It was the traditional turkey and stuffing, meat pie, or "tourtiere" as we French folks call it, coffee and gingerbread cookies. Pretty good foood, and the price, free, was good too.
So a little more than a week until Christmas and there still isn't any snow on the ground. We had a bit last week but it all melted and now they're predicting a green Christmas. I haven't seen one of those in years.
Anyway, that's all for now. Have a great weekend folks.
Oh, that's me sitting on our director's knee at the party (he was playing Santa), As you can see we were having a great time and the wine was going down quite well.

Monday Evening Meanderings
No, I didn't get the Christmas lights up ! I was going to put them up yesterday because it was fairly warm out but it turns out one string of lights was half dead and the other completely dead, so after fooling with them for an hour or two I threw them all away. My wife's going to buy new ones this week so I guess it'll have to wait another couple of days. But hey, at least I tried. Other than that we managed to get the lights on the tree and various decorations throughout the house. We usually don't take this long to get it together but we've both been sick and low on energy lately, especially my wife.
So we did indeed go to Kingston on Friday. We shopped for a couple of hours as it was all we could manage, then went for a bite to eat at Kelsey's Restaurant, then it was off to Chuck E Cheese's for a bit so the princess could play. We had a couple of those cheesey photos done again (get it, cheesey photos). That's me and the princess. Gotta get a digital camera ! We then headed back to Grandma's and we were all in bed by 10 p.m.
Saturday we attended a 60th birthday party for a relative in the afternoon then drove home. The princess and I started to watch The Grinch in the evening but we both fell asleep so that was that. And of course yesterday was the stuggle with the lights and decorations.
Anyway, hopefully this week will be a little better although we're still not feeling tip top, in fact I think my cold is coming back with a vengeance just when I thought I had it beat. Oh well, at least I've got the office dinner on Wednesday evening to look forward to.
One other thing. You folks know how much I love to read, and of course you also know that Stephen King is my favourite author. Well, I thought I'd mention that Dean Koontz is definitely giving King a run for his money in my book (oops, I did it again). I've read several of Koontz's books over the years, but especially in the last year or two. Koontz has the ability to write great stories which combine the supernatural with a belief in the human spirit. If you've never read any of his stuff I suggest you give him a try, you'll come away pleasantly surprised at his skills as a storyteller and as a master at showing us what is good about the human race.

Just Stuff
I just read the following headline on a web site: "RCMP Dismantles Cocaine Ring." That's good because the RCMP shouldn't sell cocaine. It gives Canada a bad image.
I want this for Christmas. It's not asking too much eh, just a book from my favourite author? Oh, I also want a bag of red licorice and a bag of molasses kisses because I love both. We're talking maybe $20 here, and I'll be a happy camper for weeks.
I took the day off tomorrow so this is like my Friday. We're off to Kingston for the day, do a little shopping. Well, my wife will shop. As will her grandmother. And maybe the princess. I'm just along for the ride. Oh, and to carry bags (so the princess tells me). I don't mind, we always go to lunch, maybe even dinner so it's worth the trip.
I feel bad for those of you who have to work tomorrow. Well, except for Suzi because she loves her job so much. Plus she goes to work in pyjamas with feet in them.
I think I want to do something more with the writing in 2007. Not that I'm like a great author or anything but I do enjoy writing stories and poems and I'm thinking I should try to put them "out there" a little more.
Anyway, that's it for now.

Monday Morning Morsels
Well, another weekend has come and gone and we're that much closer to Christmas. Can anyone say stop the bus ! I mean seriously, time is flying faster than a cockatoo on crack at a cat lover's convention.
So the lad was home for the weekend and it was great to see him. Funny how the house feels different when all the kids are there, more comfortable, more alive.
As usual we got a movie and watched it together on Saturday night. It was supposed to be a scary movie (yeah, I know, I know, but read on). The movie was called "The Night Watchers", and when we read the synopsis on the box it sounded scary so we rented it. What we didn't know was that this movie was made in Russia and translated into English. Can you say stupid plot ? Can you say cheap special effects ? Can you say sucks like a vaccum cleaner ? First of all, we never did quite figure out what was supposed to be going on, although it had to something do with vampires and shape-shifters. Russian vampires and Russian shape shifters. You never actually see them change, they just talk about it a lot. Because they're Russian and the KGB might be watching. So is the audience but they don't count. Also, money might have something to do with it , as in they didn't have any to spend on special effects. There was also something about a vortex, it was supposed to look like a hurricane but it looked more like a kitchen funnel and I swear I saw the word Tupperware on it. Oh, and a big yellow jet-powered truck that the heroes rode around in. Somehow the line "Quick Vladimir, to the big yellow truck" doesn't have the same ring as "Quick Robin, to the Batmobile." The funniest scene in the whole movie was when one of the characters is watching television and the camera turns to it and we see he's watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer. My son turned to me and said "they didn't have enough money for their own special effects so they ripped off Buffy." So we laughed and joked through the whole thing. We had to, otherwise the evening would have been a bust.
Here's an interesting bit of info. In Canada, if a door has a sign on it that says "Automatic Door", it means you have to push it, then it automatically opens. No different than a regular door actually, except for the sign. If you're planning to visit Canada you'll want to keep that in mind otherwise you'll find yourself standing in front of a lot of unopened doors looking like a dumb tourist.
Oh, and I still didn't get the Christmas lights up but I'm working on it.
One more thing, you guys and gals gotta take a look at these, they're hilarious.

Tuesday Morning Tidbits
I know, all you Canadians would rather have Timbits but you'll have to settle for Tidbits. But hey, at least they're fat free.
So I didn't get the Christmas lights up last weekend as planned. What , I never said I was planning to put them up ? Then forget I mentioned it.
So I'm planning to put Christmas lights up this week, next weekend at the latest. I better do it soon anyway coz it's supposed to get cold in a couple of days.
The princess and I went to the library last night. We hadn't been for a couple of months so she really wanted to go. We had to renew our library cards when we got there but mine had a big fine on it so we only renewed hers. Then she borrowed some books, and I borrowed one too, and put it on her card. But first I asked if it was okay with her.
My wife went to Peterborough last weekend to visit the lad. Seems he was getting a bit lonely as he doesn't drink alcohol and surprise, university kids drink a lot. Anyway, his mom brought up a little portable television and his Playstation so he's not so bored on those nights when everybody's out partying except him.
On a final note, if you're waiting for a story, there's one coming soon. I'm also trying to write a poem right now. The idea for it came to me the other night, and I can see it in my mind but writing it is proving togher than usual. I'll get it though.

CSI Miami
I'm addicted to CSI Miami. Yeah, I know, it's been around for a while but I hadn't watched it yet, then one night a few weeks ago I watched it because everything else that was one was boring as heck (read reality shows and a bald guy who used to be funny asking people the eternal question, the one we will all be asked some day as we stand at the gates of heaven playing for all-or-nothing, up or down, air contioned condo with a jacuzzi and a pretty blonde maid or eternity scrubbing the toilet bowl with a toothbrush, "Deal or No Deal."
Anyway, back to CSI Miami. I like David Caruso's character. He's a bit unbelievable but who on television isn't. Plus he's cool. And who wouldn't want to be named Horatio. I know I'd like it, although I'd probably have to change my last name too coz it's French and French people would have trouble with it. In fact if a French person tried to say Horatio he'd sound like he was horking up a booger, which would take the cool out of it. I like Alex and Caleigh too, both smart, good looking women. But it's Horatio who steals the show, what with his sunglasses and his way of turning his head to show you his manly profile when he talks, as though he's already thinking about something else while the mental midget he's conversing with is still trying to comprehend the meaning of Horatio's last incredibly insightful statement.
Anyway, I promised long ago that I wouldn't blah blah blah about television so I'll stop now (besides, a story is suggesting itself).
On a different note, I'm sorry I haven't been around much lately, but I've also stated on a couple of occasions that I don't feel like blogging when things aren't going well and things have indeed been a little rough on the old homestead lately. Just don't count me out yet.
And on yet another different note, but sorta the same I'm becoming addicted (that's the same) to my friend Suzi's (she's not on television so that's different) blog. If you haven't visited her yet, get your butt over there, but only if you like humour sprinkled with a dose of sarcasm and a generous pinch of wit. She doesn't do I'm so depressed I wanna kill myself.

Morning
No, things haven't changed (at least not that I know of) but it's a new day isn't it ?
You know that expression "bathed in a golden light ?", well that's what the world looked like this morning.
When I left the house this morning the sun was just coming up and the tops of the trees were indeed bathed in a golden light, as if God was shining a giant gold spotlight on them. It was something to see on the evergreens but looked especially magical on the trees that have lost their leaves as these were completely envelopped in a soft golden glow. That same glow also touched several rooftops, making the houses look like something out of a fairy tale.
And I felt good yet sad at the same time, as if nothing was ever going to be the same again but things would still turn out okay.
I think I need to write a story.

Happy Birthday Blog
Someone asked me today how long I've been blogging and I noticed that my first entry is dated November 1st, 2004.
Previous to this I had been keeping an online journal at another site but you couldn't really call it a blog.
So, Happy Birthday OldGuy's Tree House.

Monday Morning Morsels
Geez, I missed another Sunday, certainly can't make a habit of that.
So, the lad got a tatoo. We found out about about it by accident (his sister saw it) the first time he came home and I even suggested he make an "official" announcement but it seems he wasn't quite ready to do that. When he was home again last week he still didn't say anything until the day he was leaving then I asked him to show it to me and suggested he show it to his mother as well, so he did. It's a rose with blood dripping from it surrounded by fancy black curlicues. Doesn't look to bad although I wouldn't get one myself, I'm not into tatoos.
On another note, the lad started a new type of long-lasting insulin that lasts for 24 hours so that should make it a bit easier for him as he'll no longer have to get up early every morning to do his insulin, now he just does it at night. Of course, he still has to do short-acting insulin with every meal too (it's complicated I know). Anyway, as long as it makes his life easier then it's worth it.
As for the princess, she had a project due for school this week so she and her mother worked on it all day yesterday. She had to make a map of her neighbourhood with street signs, parking lots etc. all indicated. The other kids all got a section as well and they'll put the whole thing together to make a map of the community. I'm anxious to see it.
Anyway, not much else going on so I'll sign off for now.
Oh yeah, I wrote the Halloween story, it's the post below this one.

Just a Little Update
I didn't get a chance to come by on Sunday like usual so I thought I'd just do a little update.
The lad has been home since last Friday. He brought some homework with him so has been doing some of that. On Sunday he had to do an open book exam via the internet for school so did that also.
Last night he and I watched a movie called "Two for the Money" with Matthew McConaughey and Al Pacino. Pretty good movie and we both really enjoyed it. I won't spoil it for you by telling you what it's about, you'll just have to rent it yourself.
Not much else going on right now, work is work and all is quiet on the home front.
I was going to write that Halloween story today but I'm just too lazy. I will defnitely get it done tomorrow though so check back then.

Sunday Morning Musings
I think I'm going to have to change the title of this weekly post coz I hardly ever get a chance to get at it on Sunday mornings anymore. Still, I try to think up stuff in the morning so that's gotta count for something right ?
Anyway, it's been a working weekend. I've been doing prep work prior to painting again. Yeah, painting, I can hardly wait. NOT !! Oh well, it's gotta get done so I might as well get it over with. This time it's the upstairs hallways and the baseboards throughout most of the house. Doesn't sound like a big job I know but by the time I've done all the patching, sanded the walls, and washed everything down it's a major job. And you know me, I always underestimate the work involved and the time it's going to take me so what starts out looking like a weekend job ends up taking two weekends, maybe three. The thing is, it happens every time, I just can't seem to estimate these things right. Even if I think I'm overestimating, like maybe I think okay, it looks like a small job, maybe a day or two, so I'll double that, it still takes longer than I thought it would. I don't get it, I guess I just suck at this stuff.
On another note, I wanted to say a few words about celebrating the human spirit. Maybe it's because I'm getting old and mushy but lately I really notice when this stuff shows up in a movie. I was channel surfing the other day and happened across the movie Jerry Maguire, which I'd already seen. But I flipped to it just at the scene where the football player scores a game winning touchdown and gets tackled at the same time. He's out cold in the end zone, and just when everybody is worried that he's badly hurt he opens his eyes and says "just let me enjoy this" and he lays there for a few seconds enjoying the feeling of having scored a game winning touchdown, then he gets up and dances around the field. And I started to laugh and then I started to cry because this was a celebration of the human spirit. For a few brief moments this guy was basking in glory and he was celebrating that feeling the best way he knew how.
Here's another one. I was watching "Radio Flyer" last night, and the scene near the end where Bobby takes off into the air in his jerry-rigged wagon is incredible. Surely he's going to crash you think as he's barreling down the hill, but at the last moment he takes off and starts to fly. It doesn't matter that it's impossible, because it's pure magic, magic and a feeling that nothing is impossible if you believe hard enough. And you celebrate with the boy because his magic wagon worked and his step-father will never hurt him again because he's flying away. And once again I laughed and cried.
To celebrate the human spirit; what a glorious feeling.
I haven't forgotten I owe you folks a poem and a story too. They're coming, they really are, I just keep changing my mind what I want to write about.
Cheers and until next time folks.

The Long Weekend is Over
But hey, it's already Wednesday so that isn't so bad.
What a gorgeous weekend it was too. The weather was in the high teens/low twenties (I don't remember what that is in centigrade anymore, it's been too damn long since we switched over but it was warm), definitely Indian Summer, so the last of the warm weather probably.
The lad was home for the weekend, and it was great to see him. He and I watched a movie on Saturday night, and the rest of the weekend he caught up on his game-playing as he doesn't have his Playstation at school. The princess spent some time outdoors and some time playing with the new Gamecube game she got for Thanksgiving. As stated previously, we intended to eat lots this weekend, and that we did. We barbecued steaks on Saturday, went to Grandma's for turkey dinner on Sunday, and on monday we ordered in Chinese food. Yesterday was kinda quiet as my wife wasn't feeling well, so we'll have to celebrate our anniversary another day.
With the weather being so great this weekend and the fall colours on full display I got an idea for a poem, so I'll have it up later this week.
Other than that, the only news of note today is that my friend TNC made a lovely pic to commemerate our 20th wedding anniversary, so I just had to show it to you. Thanks TN :)

Loooonng Weekend
Yep, it's Friday, and a long weekend again.
As this is Canadian Thanksgiving we have Monday off. My wife and I are also celebrating 20 years of marriage on Tuesday (not too many couples last that long these days) so I took that day off too. So that translates into a four day weekend. Gotta love that !
The lad is coming home tonight and we're all very excited to see him. His sister has been talking about it for a couple of weeks. She'll be in bed by the time he gets in but she's asked us to wake her up coz she wants to see him and give him a big hug.
We'll probably have a BBQ tomorrow then it's off the Grandma's for Thanksgiving dinner on Sunday.
Hey, I just realized I've been blogging for almost two years now and I still love it. That's by far the longest I've ever stuck a "hobby" out so I guess I'll keep at it.
Anyway, I know it's a short entry but it's Friday afternoon and the weekend is just a whisper away so I'm outta here. I'll report back on Sunday if we get back from Grandma's on time.
And yeah, I haven't forgotten about the Halloween story, in fact it's all figured out, just gotta wait till closer to the big day to post it.
Happy Thanksgiving to all you Canadians.

Sunday Morning Musings
Well, another week gone by.
Work is work, nothing much to report there.
On the home front, we had a very busy weekend. My wife and I spent most of the day yesterday cleaning up. The princess had a bunch of friends over so there were five kids at the dinner table last night. My wife picked up several pizzas and we all munched to our hearts content. Later, my wife spent the evening playing with a couple of the girls while I went to the neighbour's for a drink. Then one of the other girls stayed for a sleepover. This morning we had a big breakfast with a couple of the girls over again, then we played some games with them. After that I took four of them to see the butterfly show at Carleton University, then it was back here for cake and more games. Right now the whole crew is playing in the garage for a few minutes before everybody has to go home.
Back to the butterfly show for a bit. The kids were lukewarm on it. Me, I loved it ! They had butterflies from all over the world flying around the greenhouse. Big ones, little ones, every colour of the rainbow and then some. Black, red, emerald green, orange, yellow, etc. What a fantastic display of mother nature's beauty. And they had pieces of watermelon and oranges you could hold in the air so the butterflies would land on them. The kids didn't manage to attract any but several people did so you could stand and watch them. Actually, one very big moth did feed off a piece of watermelon that several people passed around so they could hold it. The princess thought it was pretty cool. When I got it the moth flew off and landed on one girl's nose. Now, this was one huge friggin moth so needless to say she was a little freaked out but she handled it well, didn't scream, just waited for it to fly away, which it did after a few seconds.
All in all, it was a very busy weekend.
Anyway, it's getting late, and I'm hungry so I think I'll go warm up some left over pizza.
One other thing. I hadn't done much Photoshopping for a while but this weekend I played around a bit again. Nothing fancy, just some text on a black background, which I put on my desktop. What do you think ?
Cheers, and until next time folks.

Sunday Morning Musings
So fall has officially arrived. Yep, on Sept 22nd. we bid goodbye to summer and welcomed fall. You can really tell it's here too. The trees have been changing colours for a while, in fact a lot of them have lost leaves. The weather's gotten considerably cooler and yes, thoughts are turning to Halloween. My wife got a couple of small pumpkins and a pair of fally (is that a word, am I allowed to say that ?) looking dolls for the front patio this week, and they are indeed a reminder that the seasons have changed. I always feel something when the seasons change (and no, I'm not referring to my arthritis), sort of a feeling of loss, yet wondering what the new season will bring. Call it wistfullness, I guess that's the best word for it.
How come women can get away with saying stuff men can't ? Last night a friend's son walked by and my wife commented "Have you been exercising, you look really hot." Then some blah, blah, blah and "You must have all the girls chasing after you." Now if I said something like that to a friend's daughter, oh maybe "hey, that's some hot body you got there, have you been working out ?" I'd probably get arrested. And that's after my wife finished beating me to a pulp.
The lad called last night. He seemed in a pretty good mood. We were happy to hear it because he sounded a little bummed out a few days ago. But hey, I'm sure he's going through some stuff too, it can't be easy being away from home and having to make it on your own. He'll be home at Thanksgiving so we're really anxious to see him.
I'm rereading a favourite novel of mine, and I read a couple of lines I hadn't noticed before, and they really cracked me up. You may not find them funny but to me they hit the funny bone. I gotta set the scene for you too though. So it's two priests in the cafeteria of the seminary they teach at and one of them has just arrived :
"How's the loafer."
"Who's a loafer ? I'm working."
"One lecture a week ?"
"It's the quality that counts. What's for dinner ?"
"Can't you smell it ?"
"Oh damn, is it dog day ?" Knackwurst and sauerkraut.
"It's the quantity that counts."
Oh well, it was funny when I read it.
Oh hey, before I forget, I gotta tell you about the poem below. I wrote it earlier this week and on a complete whim I submitted it to the Preston Street Business Improvement Association and they want to publish it in their next newsletter. I'm pretty excited because I've never had anything published anywhere before. Woo hoo for me !!
Anyway, the princess's friends just left and now she wants me to play Super Mario with he
