Oh, the Drama

I was going to stay out of this thing but sometimes you have to stand up and be counted.

When did common courtesy go out the window ?

I've been following the drama over at BE lately, you know the one, the whole Housewife Mafia thing and it's gotten downright ugly.

People accusing other people of having crappy blogs, sticking together to vote in BotB, "satirizing" other blogs, and even writing some sort of manifesto, is that what that is ? You download it and it protects you from the Housewife Mafia. Or did I miss the point on that one, is it supposed to be funny ?

Anyway, it seems there's no such thing as common courtesy where some folks are concerned, no "let's just agree to disagree." Mud has to be slung, names have to be bandied about, rudeness must prevail.

Maybe I'm just old and soft but it seems to me that if nobody's shooting at you, your freedom isn't jeopardized, they're not trying to take your kids away or burn your house down a simple "you're intitled to your opinion" would suffice.

But that's just the way I was raised.

Now This is Good

It's been a while since I posted one of these but Tony's entry this week was great. Go have a read, he's one funny guy. And of course I used his name in my latest story (see below) so I owe him a nod.

So, without further ado I give you I Got the Fever Baby !!!

A Dangerous Game

"Hey Tony ?"

"Yeah Tommy ?"

"How long we been holed up here ?"

"Twenty minutes."

"You think he's still out there ?"

"Oh yeah, he's still out there. That crazy frenchman never gives up."

"I gotta take a leak."

"Hold it."

"You really think he's still out there ?"

"Remember Sal ? The frenchman didn't give up till he found im."

"Yeah, but that was personal Tony. Sal stole his girlfriend."

"Don't matter Tommy, if he comes after ya you're screwed."

Suddenly they heard the words they're been dreading.

"I see you" said the frenchman.

"RUN TOMMY !" Tony yelled.

They broke cover and ran, Tony going one way, Tommy the other.

The frenchman made a quick calculation and took off after Tommy. He'd get at least get one.

Tony ran towards the tree and at the last second he dodged left to avoid ploughing into it at full speed.

"Olly olly oxen free" he yelled and turned around.

Tommy was ahead but the frenchman was gaining. At the last second the frenchman put on a burst of speed and blew past Tommy, touching the tree and calling him out.

"Aw crap" yelled Tommy, who had stopped running and was now walking up holding his sides.

"You guys wanna play again ?" asked the frenchman.

"Nah, I gotta go home for dinner" said Tony. "Hey Tommy, wanna come ?"

"Watcha havin ?"

"Wadda you care, you're only gonna stare at my sister's knockers anyway."

"Yeah. You know, I think she likes me Tony."

"Pervert."

"Dickhead."

Morning

The old man woke up and lowered his feet to the floor. That hurt he thought.

He went down on his knees, wincing as he did so, and said a little prayer.

He got up, went to the window and checked the weather. It was grey and drizzling out, no surprise given how he felt this morning.

He shuffled to the stairs and proceeded to make his way down. Sideways. One stair at a time. Like he always did when the pain was bad.

He walked into the kitchen, made his way to the cupboard and took out the tin of coffee. He then made his way to the sink, filled the coffee pot and put it on to brew.

That done he made his way slowly back upstairs to brush his teeth and take a shower. He had to bend at the waist to rinse the soap out of his hair because his arms hurt this morning and he couldn't lift them above his waist.

Once out of the shower he dressed, made his way downstairs again and poured himself a cup of coffee. He took two aspirin from the bottle on the counter and washed them down with his coffee.

He walked slowly into the small living room to await his visitor.

At precisely 8 a.m. there was a knock on the door and the old man bade his visitor enter.

"Good moning Holiness, how are you today" Cardinal Guiseppe Antonini asked the old man.

"A little pain but otherwise fine" he replied. "Please sit. Can I get you a coffee, I made a fresh pot.''

"Holiness, you must stop getting up and going to the kitchen to make coffee every morning. There are servants here and with your arthritis, well, I fear for you."

"Guiseppe" said the old man. "I made my own coffee when I was at the seminary. I made my own coffee when the communists invaded my country and closed the churches. I even made my own coffee when I stayed at the White House. And I will certainly make my own coffee here. Besides, the lord is there to guide my hand so I don't get it too strong" he said and winked.

"Now, what's the schedule for today."

Sunday Morning Musings

Just got back from our annual team building weekend last night. It was the best one we've had so far, a nice combination of not too difficult physical stuff and a few mental games. Plus the usual little party, you know just a couple drinks to relax after a hard week.

I think last year's facilitators were retired military. Or just sadistic. Yeah, there's nothing like a bunch of people who sit and answer phones all day scaling walls, jumping ropes and generally trying to be the first person to have a heart attack. You really bond with the group you know ?

Here's something interesting I learned from a co-worker this weekend. Eating boogers builds up your immune system. She said that a doctor told her that since boogers are full of nasty germs and stuff the nest way to build up your immune system against them is to eat one every once in a while.

And all these years I 've been telling the kids not to eat them.

The label on the new Mountain Dew Energy drink says "Developed for periods of increased mental and physical exertion. Helps temporarily restore mental alertness or wakefulness when experiencing fatigue or drowsiness. Recommended dose is 1/3 of a bottle."

I wish I'd read the instructions last night. Before I drank a whole bottle. Because it's been a long night.

I think I'll go shampoo my hair again. With that women's shampoo.

I saw a commercial last night on television for a bilingual cemetery. I definitely want to be buried there because I'm bilingual myself so I'll be able to make lots of friends eh.

The eh is Canadian by the way.

So have a good day eh.

She's Just oneladymedic

I promised Stacie a little poem so here it is.

It's up and at em every morning
Pets and kids to care for daily
And by the way mommy loves you
And you're not a big loser Haleigh

She likes to blog and battle
Blogexplosion is her mecca
So tell us a little story lady
Something about Rebecca

Why don't all babies have wieners ?
Well, just listen to this slogan
God builds em like little projects
So there's your answer Logan

When the little one is ill
And looking like a wraith
She goes into mommy mode
And just has a little Faith

Once the kids are sleeping
And the land has gone dark
It's racy Stacie to the rescue
And she's always on the Marc

Life Goes On

It's been a week filled with incredible emotion and I'm not sure where to start so I'll just run with it and see how this post turns out.

The death of the girl has impacted me to a far greater degree than I ever thought imaginable. I have cried so often this week that my eyes hurt.

I have tried to understand why I have been so impacted by this tragic event and I think I've come up with a couple of reasons.

First and foremost I keep seeing her smile and how it must have brightened someone's day and the thought that it will never do so again hurts so bad I can't believe it. I think how her family must have felt when she smiled like that and then I think of how they must feel now, knowing they'll never see it again and the sadness is overwhelming.

I have also gone over and over her last moments in my mind. Not that I was there of course but my damn vivid imagination sees how it might have been and I imagine the fear and horror she must have felt when she realized she was about to die a violent death. Nobody should ever have to feel that way.

And finally, I put myself in her father's place and imagine what he must be feeling right now. Every time I think of my own daughter suddenly being gone, never to return, the tears start again. He, and her mother of course, have a long hard road ahaead of them. They will, hopefully, get through it, but their lives will never be the same, there will always be something missing; the hugs, the warmth, that beautiful smile.

When I got off the bus the day I heard her body had been found there was something in the air, something different.

It was warm, unseasonably warm, but a soft wind was blowing, rustling the leaves on the trees. I heard the sound of a cricket, looked up to the sky and saw three birds. Yes, once again three. Strange isn't it ? The wind seemed to be whispering that summer was waning but still hanging on, bringing what warmth it could to this sad old world. The birds were trying to fly against the wind but succeeded only in hovering in place. What did their presence signify I wondered. Father, Son and Holy Ghost ? And the cricket, well, it was just being a cricket, making that sound we associate with the ending of the day.

Yesterday was the last full day of summer. Another ending. Too bad, I love warm weather. Interestingly though I learned to appreciate winter's beauty last year and wrote about it often. I guess it's a matter of looking around and seeing the beauty that is there.

It's going to be a beautiful day today, once again fairly warm for late September. Right now there's a bit of cloud but the sun is shining and it's shaping up to be a good one.

So maybe life isn't so bad after all.

And you know what ? There's another angel up there now.

Take care folks.

Oh yeah, one other thing. I owe somebody a poem. It's coming Stacie.

Jennifer

She's beautiful isn't she ?

To look at her you would imagine a bright, happy, teenage girl with the whole world ahead of her. And you'd almost be right, that's what she was.

18 years old, great student, fantastic soccer player, worked at the local Wendy's where she always greeeted people with a smile.

A nice kid.

A kid with a future.

Until someone kidnapped her on her way home from work a few weeks ago, murdered her, and dumped her body in a marsh like a piece of trash.

And now she'll never never play soccer again.

Never greet another customer with her lovely smile.

Never fulfill her dreams.

And the world is a sadder place because of it.

Rest easy Jennifer.

Sunday Morning Musings

It must be morning somewhere right ? Besides, I was musing this morning while meandering meaninglessly around the house.

So here it is Sunday evening already. Geez, the weekends just fly by. Too bad the work week didn't do that.

This was one of those weekends when you ask yourself why you had children. I mean, they're cute and I love them and all but when will they become responsible, thinking human beings ? You know, the kind of people who know what needs to be done around the house and just do it, who don't question everything you tell them, and who don't always say "no, I won't" or "you can't make me" or "that's not fair", or "I can't, it's too hard."

Ah well, as I said, it's Sunday night and the little one will be in bed soon and the big one knows I'm ticked and he's avoiding me so I can go for a bubble bath and pretend the whole weekend was just a nightmare.

Speaking of bubble baths, I always take a book and a Pepsi with me. Yep, just wrinkly old me and my book and Pepsi tuning out the world. If there is a heaven it has a giant tub with jets and lots of bubbles and there's a fridge next to it full of ice cold Pepsi and there's an endless selection of good books to read and if you accidentally drop them in the tub they don't get all wet and swelled up, nope, they come out of the water looking just fine thank you.

So what else is new ? Oh yeah, didn't get that about page done, maybe tomorrow. Like I said, it was one of those weekends. I do have a little treat for ya though. The picture in the upper right corner ? Yep, that's the old guy and if you click on it you get to see me bigger ! My wife said I shouldn't use that picture because I'm wearing a pajama shirt but I figured why not, it's not like anybody will know right, I mean who's gonna say anything ? Certainly not me !

Anyway, the princess is chilling out with her mom, probably getting her toes painted. No television though because she lost tv privileges today, so I'm off for that bubble bath.

BTW, which category should I put this post in, The Sunny Side of Life or The Cloudy Side of Life ? Whaddaya think eh ?

Update- I just noticed that when you click on the photo to view it large you get a pop up about an IQ test. Sorry about that folks. Maybe I'll find some place else for it because I can't stand pop ups !

More Thoughts, Random Ones, Because They Were Spilling Out

I was walking the last little stretch to work this morning when I noticed a lot of sewer drains have a fish symbol on them. What's that supposed to mean ? Fish here ? I don't think so.

Then I noticed that others had the Bell Canada (that's our phone company) symbol. No holes to let the water in, just the symbol. So I'm thinking that's where all the payphones went. Unobtrusive but inconvenient. Maybe they figured most people have cell phones anyway so they would punish those who don't by putting the phone booths underground. Under big heavy manhole covers. Teach them a lesson. Get a cell phone.

On a completely different note, I found out a few weeks ago I have hypo someting or another, low blood sugars. Have you ever had your blood sugar go low ? You sweat and shake and feel really stupid, like your brain just switched to low gear. Like I needed another reason to look stupid. Seriously though, my son (the diabetic) gets this sometimes so now I know how it feels.

I'm updating the categories on the blog this weekend because they don't seem quite right anymore. Might add an about page too. I know, I know, you're all dying to know a bit more about the OldGuy, I can tell. Anyway, we'll see.

Yes, the redesign is coming. The person doing it is attending to personal matters right now.

Maybe I should change the title of this post to Friday Morning Musings because they're just like thoughts you know, but that might spoil the whole Sunday Morning Musings thing so maybe not, maybe I'll just leave it as is, it's just that I think about stuff sometimes and I can't wait until Sunday because I'm really excited or I might forget since I forget stuff really easy, it must be my age or maybe it just leaks out, I don't know.

Whew !!

On a final note, the police have called off the search for the girl. Doesn't mean they're giving up, just that they've searched the area as thoroughly as they can and come up empty. So now they switch to looking over any evidence and tips they've gathered. Sorry to end this post on such a somber note but I had to mention that.

Anyway, have a great Friday and a fantastic weekend.

The Score

The big Italian walked into the Japanese restaurant, sat down, and let his eyes wander around the place.

He was looking for the Colombian, the one called Juan.

The waiter arrived and he ordered a cup of coffee, thinking he didn't have time to eat.

A few minutes later a blind guy walked in with a German Shepherd, proceeded unerringly to the Italian's table, and sat down.

As if on cue the waiter came back and asked the blind guy if he wanted a menu.

"Not unless it's in braille. Just bring me a Danish and a cup of Turkish coffee" responded the blind guy.

"Sir, this is a Japanese restaurant."

"In that case I'll have sushi and sake. And don't forget the soy sauce."

The waiter left to fill the blind man's order.

"Who are you and what do you want ?" asked the Italian

"I'm Juan"

"But you're ... I mean you can't ..."

"I know, I'm Indian. I changed my name. Noboby takes a dealer named Gupta seriously."

"I wasn't referring to that although now that you mention it ... So ... uh ...what's the dog's name ?"

"Patty. I won him from an Irish guy in a poker game."

"What is this, the twilight zone ? "

"Forget about it. You got the money ?"

"Yeah, it's right here." The Italian slid an envelope across the table.

"Careful, you want somebody to see us ?"

"Sorry. Can I have the stuff now ?"

The dealer nodded and handed the Italian the package under the table. The Italian put it inside his coat, exited the restaurant and called a cab.

He got to the house, unlocked the door, entered, and saw the boss waiting for him.

"Did you get the coffee dear ?" she asked.

"Yes, sweetie. But we have to start buying it at the store like everybody else. These independent contractors are getting weird."

Why

I’ve always wanted to go to Israel, see where our lord walked, touch things he touched
But mosques are torn down in the Gaza strip and violence reigns there

The emerald isle is a place I’ve dreamed of going; maybe see a leprechaun or two
But there is rioting in Belfast because people of different religions can’t get along

Once upon a time I wanted to go to New York, see the Trade Center Towers
But some crazy people flew planes into them and killed thousands of other people

I used to think I wanted to go to London to see where the queen lives
But terrorists put bombs on subways there so they could make a point

I thought about going to Japan once, see the lights of Tokyo
But then I heard the subways were dangerous there too, people getting gassed

Finally I decided to stay home because home is warm and bright and safe
But now a few blocks away police are desperately searching for a beautiful young girl

So I think I’ll hide here in the tree house because nothing can hurt me here
And I can pretend the world outside doesn’t exist and violence isn’t real

**Okay folks, I don't mean to be such a bummer but this thing about the young girl really has me shaken up. You go through life thinking violence cannot touch you or anyone near you and then you wake up one day and there's cops all over the place and you realize that your little neighbourhood, where everybody knows everybody else and where you all watch out for each other, isn't as safe as you thought it was and you feel violated and you wonder if your kids are safe today. I mean, yeah sure you know it happens but damn, this is where I live ! I'm sure I'll feel better in a few days but for now this has thrown me for a loop**

Sunday Morning Musings

Okay I know it's Sunday afternoon, cut me a break already !

Sunday morning musings are usually funny but today is an exception I'm afraid. Please read on.

Yesterday would have been my dad's 75 birthday but he died in 1995, about a month after my mom died. It didn't really hit me yesterday, maybe because we were kinda busy but today I've had a little time to myself, and well, "I miss you dad, mom too, hope you're both doing okay."

They played a couple of Elvis Presley songs on the radio this morning, Suspicious Minds and In the Ghetto. Great songs, absolutely great, definitely two of his best.

Guess who got misty again ?

Speaking of getting misty though, today was a day for that. Besides missing my parents today is also the anniverssary of 9/11 of course. Nobody will ever forget that day, I certainly won't. I remember exactly where I was when I first heard the news and watching the television all day the horror just kept getting worse by the minute.

Closer to home we have another reason to cry today. An 18 year old girl from the neighbourhood went missing Friday night. She hasn't been seen since she left Wendy's just after her evening shift to walk home. Today the police were looking for volunteers to canvas streets in the neighbourhood so my wife and I went for a few hours. They asked people to stop around 2 p.m., apparently because they are overwhelmed with information. No news of her whereabouts yet.

As a parent this is my worst nightmare, and to have it happen in our quiet sleepy neighbourhood just hits too damn close. This girl lived a couple of streets over, in fact I take the bus to work every day a few blocks from her home. Okay, she may turn up alive but right now the official police position is that foul play is suspected.

So if you have kids give them an extra hug and kiss before bed tonight and thank God you still have them because they can be snatched away from you in an instant.

As can your parents.

Anyway, take care folks, hope your day is a good one.

Just Thoughts

We went to grandma's yesterday and just got back a few minutes ago.

To clarify, grandma is actually my wife's great-grandmother. She's been like a mother to my wife for years though and like a grandmother to our children. They love her, she loves them, and she always spoils them. Actually she spoils the whole family. As we live fairly close we visit often and she's always happy to see us. She's a fantastic cook so we eat well too, and as I said, she spoils the whole family.

While we were there I went for a walk down by the river (she lives in Brockville, which is on the St Lawrence River) because it was such a beautiful day today. The sun was out, it wasn't too warm, just right, and the sun was reflecting off the river in a lovely way.

I went and sat on the rocks by the water and a little otter (I think it was an otter ) kept poking it's head out from between a couple of rocks. I think it wanted to get in the water but at first it was afraid to get too close to me. After a while it seemed to gain some confidence because it came out and sat on the rocks and sunned itself for a few minutes before diving in. Cute little fella, very friendly once we got to know each other.

And on a final note (no pun intended) I was watching "The Early Show" on television this morning when a British singer came on. I can't remember his name, but apparently he's well known in Europe. Anyway, he sang "You Lift Me Up" and he had a voice like an angel. He brought tears to my eyes (yeah, I know, that's not hard).

Which got thinking about the type of music I like.

I like stuff I can sing too, like Sweet Caroline, You Lift Me Up, Mr Bojangles.

Yeah, some people might say it's mushy stuff but to me music should be uplifting, it should make me happy, it should reach into the core of my being and bring me a special joy, one that makes me glad to be alive.

But maybe that's just me.

Anyway, have a great day everybody and catch you all tomorrow or the next day.

Now This is Good

And finally, today's edition of Now This is Good.

When I first read this post it scared the hell out of me. I was reminded of the The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, or perhaps an episode of The Twilight Zone. Imagine being taken over by a force so great and terrible that you lose your entire personality.

Anyway, without further ado I give you Paging Professional Stacie... Hello... Hellooo ??

Contrasts

As I've said before, I don't do photography, I leave that to the experts so the best I can do is describe a scene to you and let your imagination do the rest.

Anyway, this morning's ride into work afforded some lovely sights, contrasts if you will.

The first thing I noticed this morning was the fog. When I first boarded the bus it was quite thick and you couldn't see any further than a few yards. As the bus passed the fields on the way towards town the fog lay low and thick, like a grey blanket covering everything. You couldn't see the sky either, just grey from the ground all the way to the heavens.

As we continued down the parkway and along the river the fog was again the predominant feature. It lay over the river and you could actually see mist rising off the water as though we were driving past a giant hot springs. Here and there you could make out a spot of brown or black on the water, perhaps a duck, perhaps just a log sticking out of the water, the quality of the fog made it difficult to tell.

The trees also looked dark, muted, almost unenthusiatic, as if muttering "Don't look at me, I'm not at my best right now."

Then suddenly the bus drove into brilliant sunlight. It was as if God had said "Enough of this, it's Friday and people want colour to start their weekend." The sun shone brilliantly in the azure sky and a few puffy white clouds dotted the horizon, adding an extra touch of brilliance.

The leaves on the trees lit up as though someone had turned on the lights inside them. Green of various hues shone dazzlingly, and the river too reflected points of light like jewels.

And you could feel the mood lighten on the bus, as though everyone was saying thank you at the same time.

This One's for Joe

Joe asked me to write a poem about him
But I cannot do that just on a whim
Rhyming is hard, it takes some thought
Get it wrong and see what you've wrought

So I started to think really hard
Because Joe's my friend and such a card
What can I say I wondered aloud
That would make Joe so very proud

Perhaps I'll mention that he's very kind
A quality that is increasingly hard to find
Or maybe that he believes in God
And isn't just some drunken old sod

I just have one little problem you see
And it really is quite vexing to me
I cannot seem to rhyme the word idiot
So I guess I'll just keep fiddling with it

Laundry Day

Thanks to PureMood for the inspiration for the following little ditty.

Sorting the darks and the lights
Here the colours, there the whites

Don't throw that red shirt over there
Or someone will get pink underwear

She only wore that outfit for an hour or so
Back in her clothes closet it will go

Do I wash this in cold or in hot ?
There used to be a tag but now there's not

Tide and Zero and Sunlight too
So many choices, what am I to do ?

Out of the washer and in the dryer now
Can't forget fabric softener or the kids'll have a cow

Time to fold all this stuff because the dryer is done
I used to have ten pairs of socks but now I have none

End of Sumer Celebration

Surprisingly work's not too busy today so I do have time for this.

I did want to write a few words about what we did on Sunday because it was kind of nice.

Our kids absolutely love having a fondue and the princess had asked that we do one before school started so Sunday was the day.

We usually do it up pretty well. We prepare beef, chicken, shrimp and scallops as well as a whole bunch of vegetables. It's quite a bit of prep, but it's worth it in the end.

My wife also bought a large bottle of white wine for the three of us (yeah, the lad can have a glass or two with mom and dad on special occasions) and something special to drink for the princess. After all, she likes to drink out of a wine glass too.

Anyway, we sat down to diner around 6:30 and ate for 2-3 hours. A little of this in the onion soup broth, a little of that cooked in oil, some fresh baked bread, etc.

But the biggest reason we all love a fondue is that it isn't just dinner, it's a social gathering, a chance to spend a few hours together catching up on each other's lives, chatting about the future, and just enjoying each other's company.

And in today's fast-paced society, where dinner often means warming something up in the microwave because you're in a hurry to get to a soccer practice or a PTA meeting or you're just too damned tired to cook, it's nice to be able to spend a few hours with the family, eating, chatting, joking, telling stories AND NOT WATCHING TELEVISION.

It's times like these that make it all worthwhile.

I'm Back

Not that I really went anywhere.

We had planned to get away for a few days over the long weekend but unfortunately circumstances dictated otherwise. The price of gas combined with money spent on new school suplies and stocking the pantries for the start of the school year meant we simply couldn't afford to go anywhere so we stayed home and puttered around the house (if you can call cleaning and shopping and getting school supplies puttering).

Oh well, we did manage to get some relaxation time in and there are certainly people far worse off than I am right now so I'm not complaining.

On the up side my Movable Type was upgraded to version 3.2 this weekend so I have loads more features to play around with and comment spam will be easier to control. Thanks to Paul Laudanski for that. Paul is chief cook and bottle washer at Castle Cops, great place to check out if your computer is infected with viruses or spyware. The link is also in the sidebar.

I'm also getting closer to that redesign I've hinted at and I'm very much looking forward to that.

I still haven't gotten around to revising the categories so hopefully I'll get to that soon. I won't be making a lot of changes just a few things to add/delete. I think I'll wait on the redesign and then do everything at once.

Finally, it's the first day of school here and also the first day back to work after a long weekend so it's going to be a very busy day. I've got a few ideas on the go for stories and such but I guess they'll have to wait until tomorrow.

Anyway, it's nice to be back. Take care folks.
